Byron Bay has gotten a reputation for being a backpackers’ paradise. Part of the route many travelers take when road tripping the East Coast of Australia, it’s not a ‘hidden’ destination to budget travelers. It is, however, when it comes to pretty much everyone else. Which is a real shame, because Byron Bay has so much to offer.
Byron Bay can be split into three main areas, and picking which to spend most of your time in can have a huge impact on your trip. The town center is, understandably, the center of everything. Main Beach, the supermarket, and most of the pubs and restaurants are here. Tallow’s Beach is on the southern side of the headland, and the place where you’ll find up-market family rentals. Finally, to the northern side Belongil Beach offers budget holiday houses and schoolies accommodation.
Schoolies is one of the main reasons that most non-backpackers stay away from Byron Bay. Schoolies is a few weeks in November when graduating high school students take over the town. As long as you avoid Byron Bay during the Schoolies weeks, you won’t have any issues with partying or overcrowding.
Visiting Byron Bay puts travelers in arms reach of many popular attractions. Cape Byron is Australia’s easternmost point, a beautiful wilderness area, and the waters offshore are a marine reserve. The Cape Byron Lighthouse is Australia’s easternmost lighthouse and well worth a visit. Lennox Head is a hugely popular surfing spot for the locals, and is within 15-minutes drive. Macadamia Castle is also nearby, and great to visit with kids.
