Sunshine Coast, Australia

The Sunshine Coast is like an artwork in itself

The Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail is a self-guided trail that embraces the work of leading local, national and international artists in a cultural environment that makes the perfect alternative to Brisbane.

To follow the trail, pick up a brochure from any Sunshine Coast information centre. The trail takes advantage of the Sunshine Coast region’s reputation for fine art. From traditional oil and watercolour paintings to scultputres of marble, sandstone and bronze, hand-blown glass, silk and textile art, photography, jewellery pieces and more, the trail really does show the best the region has to offer. The trail can be completed in a very full day (and we mean very full), or as long as you wish.

The trail starts in Buderim, near Mooloolaba, south of the Sunshine Coast Airport. There are two stops here: Art Nuvo, and the Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery. Both galleries feature traditional, collectable paintings, whilst Art Nuvo also displays sculptures. From Buderim it’s around to Cairncross Corner for Art on Caincross, before heading to Montville, where you’ll find the largest collection of galleries in one place on the trail. Secrets on the Lake, Illume Creations, Natures Image Photography, Montville Art Gallery and the Main Street Gallery are your stops here, featuring a range of art styles from glass to photography and fine art.

Maleny is your next stop, with four galleries to see: the Gary Myers Gallery, Ben Messina Landscapes, the Peace of Green Gallery and the David Linton Gallery. From Maleny, the trail heads west to Kenilworth, where you’ll see paintings and glass art at the Lasting Impressions Gallery. Heading back towards the coast, Eumundi is home to three of the trail’s galleries. The Tina Cooper and Red Desert Galleries and Eumundi Art Space display glass, Aboriginal and boutique works. Only three stops remain on the trail, at Glenview, Caloundra and Sippy Downs. These galleries: Opals Down Under, the Caloundra Regional Gallery and the University of Sunshine Coast Gallery are larger than most on the trail, but offer no less of a beautiful viewing experience.

Once you’ve finished visiting the amazing galleries showcased on the train, why not complete your trip by visiting one of the Sunshine Coast’s markets and picking up some local art to take home.
